What Matters Most in a Classroom

By Suzanna Mullins, VA © suzannamullins@gmail.com

What matters most in a classroom?

I know! It’s having the standards written on the board.

NO! It’s the welcoming smile written on the teacher’s face.

What matters most in a classroom?

Is it proving mastery of every standard?

No, it’s assuring the child who fails a standard that this teacher’s love is unconditional.

What matters most in a classroom?

I’ve got it! Teach to the test, make our scores the best!

NO! Teach to the student. Look at them! Know what’s going on outside of school! They are all unique! They all have different needs and learning styles!

What matters most in a classroom?

I’ve got it. I’ve finally got it. Self-confidence, compassion, acceptance, community, stability, and love.

Yes, that is what matters most in a classroom.
