When the War Ends

By Judith R. Merz, NJ © jrmerz@aol.com

When the War ends, the darkened field of battle shatters with Light.

Deception, dead at the hands of Honesty, sprawls awkwardly among the shimmering blades.

Its tongue removed, Lie mutters incoherently against its mortal foe, Truth,

And breathes its last.

Greed’s empty heart spills meaningless at the feet of Generosity,

Who offers hopeless comfort.

Anger’s dying face drains of red,

Staring yearningly at the patient face of Joy.

And Hatred, curled upon itself,

Casts one last witless, defiant glance at Love.
